The spokeswoman of the Ministery of Justice of Holland said that the authorities were trying to carry out severe measures towards online casinos and that they were communicating with banks so that these did not supply online casinos of financial services.
The mainly prosecuted online casinos are the Unibet and the Oranje. Regarding these, the spokeswoman said: “It’s illegal for the Netherlands to offer online casino services without a permission. These companies know that they are going against the law.” Although the spokeswoman did not identify other companies beside these two, the Ministry made a list of between 30 and 50 online casinos and has asked each Dutch bank to suspend its services to these companies.
“Since this is a Dutch issue, we have only asked for the participation of Dutch banks”, said the spokeswoman. By deciding to exclude the online casino companies from other countries that also belong to the European Union, the Netherlands have put themselves in a compromising situation. The European Union has informed the government that the situation in question is in a dilemma with the requisites of the European Union regarding the free circulation of goods and services.
It can be assumed that online casinos fit perfectly well under this category, and this is why the Dutch have a problem to solve. Although each country is autonomous and is governed by its own laws, it can’t leave aside the fact that it belongs to a community of countries which are constantly searching for a more general interest, as well as restraint-free communication and understanding between each of the countries involved.
